My second month at ConocoPhillips has come to an end. With the month, my time with the desktop support team came to an end as well. With this team I got to see IT support functionalities at its core.
As I got more comfortable with the daily tasks, I was given opportunities to learn and experience some of the more challenging aspects of the job. One example is when I got trained on supporting the meeting rooms, as well as the main auditorium. This also gave me an opportunity to see how the company has implemented the latest innovative technologies to help make tasks such as meetings and presentations more intuitive for users. Given the right tools, presentations can be fun!
As a result of the training, a wonderful opportunity presented itself, and I got to support a company-wide town hall by the President of ConocoPhillips Canada. I also started taking up more tasks and actively implemented the learning-from-doing approach. The team members were happy to answer my questions and supported me in taking up more challenging tasks.
I believe that I’ve gained much from this experience. I’ve come to realize that there are set procedures for each of the business processes in place at the organization. It is of the up-most importance to be compliant to these procedures, while at the same time, striving to make them more efficient.
My first month at ConocoPhillips has been great. On the first day, after the mandatory briefings, it was time to introduce myself to some of the individuals & teams that I’ll be working with during my co-op work term at ConocoPhillips.
So began the immense and intriguing task of understanding the role that IT plays in a big (massive) oil and gas company. As each day passes it becomes increasingly evident that technology is very crucial to the organization and in more ways than one. From that mouse that doesn’t seem to work today to the server that just failed; everything that IT does has a varied but direct impact on daily operations for the company.
There are four major work teams/groups in the current IT structure at ConocoPhillips Canada. I’ve been assigned to the ‘Desktop Support’ team to kick things off. It involves a lot of hardware competence, as well as logical and decision making skills. As is with most roles in an organization, it’s difficult to encompass all that I do in one paragraph, but it’s sure is something that I do enjoy doing. It can be seen as a good opportunity to learn from the very roots. I hope to go into some level of detail in the coming posts. That is all for this one folks. Cheers!
